SISTERS

Sisters make circles of time, a completing of sentences and memories and laughter, the past curving into now and you both know how it all rolls.

Will she hold the other end of line in enfolded prayer when her sister calls late, weeping over a heart that fell down a flight of love and shattered all silent?

Will they wear each other’s Birks and tell each other that those jeans just have to go and laugh till their cheeks hurt and begin their day with early morning phone prayers?

Will they be sisters, the shared childhood that never ends, the friendship that transcends?
Ann Voskamp

Yes, they will!  They will finish each others sentences, they will laugh til they cannot laugh anymore, we don't wear Birks but we do wear each others cowboys boots and stilettos, they will cry until they cannot cry anymore, they will pray fervently for one another and they will in essence complete one another.  MARY IS MOVING BACK!!!  So our dream of living in perfect matching houses side by side is one step closer!

Oh and if that wasn't enough to make me giddy...Grandma moved back and lives a 1/4 mile from us!  We have spent like 7 out of the last 10 days with her, the boys and I are so excited!

A Special Birthday Present

Every year on each of the boys' birthdays their Uncle Chris, Aunt Jen, and cousin Grayson have them over for a sleepover and a special day together as their birthday present.  This year when Jack chose not to have a party, he said, "well, I have chosen not to have a party but I want to make sure that I still get my day with Grayson if I don't have the party."  So obviously it is something he looks forward to every year.  Jack's love language is quality time, so this present is complete love to him. Here are some pictures from this year's birthday at the museum...

Thanks Uncle Chris, Aunt Jen, and Gray...we love you!

A Little Summer Fun

Twice a year I go through all the pictures we have taken for 6 months, print them, label them, and put them in photo albums!  I HATE the chore of it but love having the albums.  My mama has all of these old photo albums that are precious to my sisters and I.  I have tried to carry on that tradition!
So....I just went through the organizing, printing process and wanted to share some pictures from over the summer.  Yes, we have had a rough few months since we moved but there has been a lot of joy through the pain.  Matty V is encouraging me to see the joy amidst the pain and so I thought I would share it with you too!
We convinced Daddy to go to the pool with us!

We got to spend Jessica's birthday with her at the zoo!  This is MoMo seeing giraffes for the first time!  It was awesome.

This is Ken's way of feeding the giraffes...

Riding the carousel

They did not want to take a picture with me but I told them I took them to the zoo so the least they could do would be to take a picture with their Mama!

Mo wanted to go into the chicken coop!

AAAGGGHHHH!
When we left for our anniversary night, Grammy got the boys a brand new set of GI Joe guys!  It was obviously a highlight!

The city of Monument had a Labor Day parade to try to make up for the cancelled 4th of July one.  This is the boys traveling over to their spot to watch the parade.

And Daddy in the dunk tank!  Jack begged him to go so he did.  There was literally no one around and when he got in a crowd of people came to watch Jack dunk his Daddy!  It was great!

 Lots of summer baseball!
Our first football game starts tomorrow!

Since the ambulance ride...

I thought I would give a quick update as to what we have found out since the ambulance ride!  Let me preface this with the fact that I went back and forth about writing down the details of what has happened.  When I asked myself why, it all came down to pride though.  I believe you show Jesus through the brokenness of your life and sometimes you have to put pride aside.  This is just one of those times.  For His glory, I share where we are with you…

Two days after we spent the night in the ER, I had a severe panic attack here at our house.  It wasn’t anything that I had ever experienced before.  I had a hot flash and then there was a rush of panic and fear that just swept over me.  The events of the night are kinda blurry but I do know that my amazing husband spoke softly and with such wisdom that he was able to calm me down enough to pray over me and get me to sleep.  That was…until I woke up at 1am to the same thing.  I called Ellen who picked up her phone to a very scared girl on the other end of the line.  We spoke for quite awhile until she was able to get me calm enough to pick up my Bible, go back downstairs to read it, and have Matt pray over me.  The next day I called my cousin pretty much in the exact state who explained that I was okay and that the fear was actually grief.  This was common for what I had been through and I needed to go to a doctor and explain what was going on.  I went to our doctor and Shari (you girls know if you need someone to straighten you out of your mess, she is the gal to see…if you don’t know her she is the sweetest, most loving counselor in town)!  I was literally lying on my husband’s lap when I got to her; I was in such a catatonic state.  There I was diagnosed with PTSD.  Yep, apparently delivering a stillborn baby in a room where you are watching your city literally burn can cause trauma.  And that trauma can lead to post traumatic stress disorder.  Over the course of the past two weeks, Matt and my Fab 5 have given their days to take care of me.  Someone comes to the house to be with me or I go to their house and Mary is on standby day and night for me to call.  I am able to care for the boys and myself, however I am far less likely to panic if someone is with me.  This week I began to stay by myself some and next week I am spending half days with wonderful, Godly women.

There are stages to grief as you may know and I have hit the stage of realization and depression.  The shock has worn off, the anger has been had and now my heart has realized the magnitude of what has happened.  I have lost two little boys this year, one that I held in my own arms.  It just flooded over me in a way that I was not expecting two months later.

Sunday, I knelt down at the altar to take communion and I had no words.  I was so broken and confused that I just sat.  Laura came and sat with me a few moments later and I collapsed in her arms.  I wept all through worship.  I wept like I have never wept before.  And it continued on after church with loving women surrounding me as I just cried and cried for that precious baby.  I said out loud all the pain that was in my heart and I just wept, that’s all there is to it, I wept and was physically held up by my husband and women surrounding me. It was a healing experience that I greatly needed.

On Monday, we were able to see the thyroid specialist after much speculation that my thyroid may have played a role in losing the boys.  I had developed what was thought to be post-partum thyroiditis after I had Moses.  We were told that wouldn’t affect future pregnancy though and it was pretty common to develop after having a baby.  However, the new doctor confirmed that I had developed an auto-immune thyroid disorder.  And guess what it can cause if not leveled out…chest pain, anxiety, and panic.  I will have it the rest of my life however it is treatable.  We just need to get my thyroid at levels that cause the pain to go away and I will get checked every couple months for it.  So, we are in the process of getting my thyroid leveled out which could take anywhere from 3-6 months and I am seeing Shari as often as I can to work through the PTSD.

There is also one other side to this story that I would love your prayer in.  If you have never experienced spiritual warfare, you may not know what I am talking about but these past couple weeks there has been a lot in this house.  Memorizing verses, speaking them aloud, praying against the enemy.  It’s a battleground; one in which I intend to conquer and survive!  I know that I am vulnerable right now and all of your prayers in me conquering the enemy and the panic when it comes would be cherished.

This is very humbling for me to share with you girls.  This is not a place that I ever thought I or our family would be.  However, I am a firm believer that the most powerful way to show people Jesus is to let them walk with you through the good and the bad.  Right now, we are in rough waters.  But we know Jesus won’t let us stay here.  He has us here for purpose and we W.A.I.T. upon Him.

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.”

4 Year Anniversary

This was us as we headed out for our anniversary getaway (in Briargate, but it was a whole night away)!  On our actual anniversary this week, everyone in our home had the stomach flu.  Matt and I literally kept laughing and telling each other Happy Anniversary in between me cleaning up kids puke and doing like a billion loads of laundry.  He was in bed with about a 103 temperature all day. I will add that to my list of TRUE STORY tales for the year, because really?  On our anniversary?  However, once recovered we got a room at our favorite hotel here in town, went out for dinner, and snuggled in for a night of relaxation.  Seriously, after 4 days of taking care of a family of sick people we were exhausted!
We did get to reminisce a little about the year.  It has been the hardest of our marriage thus far.  Just the amount of pain and stress that we have gone through.  One thing that Matty V has said to me over and over in the past few months is, WE ARE HERE AND WE ARE TOGETHER.  And oh how grateful I am for that.  Sometimes just those words gets me through the day.  We have learned this year that we are not in control, that God has asked us to do some patient waiting, and that His plan isn't always our plan.  Through what has seemed to be insurmountable pain and incredible odds, WE ARE HERE AND WE ARE TOGETHER.  And as I promised on our wedding day...I would follow you anywhere Matty V.

Jack is 7!

Jack turned seven years old on Friday!  Matt decided when each boy turned 6 years old in our house, he would begin giving them the option to continue having parties or to use their our alloted "birthday budget" money on an activity of their choice.  This year was the first year Jack chose the latter of the options. He asked to go to the movies and have a sleepover.  His best buds and mentors Caleb, Micah, and Ken went to the movies with him along with his two buddies who were coming to the sleepover, Titan and Elijah.  It still amazes me the Godly men that surround that boy and love him...two teenagers and a 27 year old dude went to see Continental Drift for a 7 year old's birthday.  God is amazing!

The sign Daddy made him that hung above his bed for the morning.

The traditional streamer door for birthdays!

Oh my gosh did this kid got a serious amount of legos!  Score!

Also the first year I did not make a homemade cake :(.  He requested a Funfetti box cake.

Sleepover Fun

Seven years ago, I went into labor with Jackson at 6:30am.  I woke up with lower back pain and asked my mama to rub my back.  Within an hour I was in full blown labor.  Mama thought it was false labor because my contractions were so close together and kept me at the house for about 3 hours.  That was until Grandma came over and told her she was absolutely crazy and she had to get me to the hospital as soon as possible!  We raced to the hospital (with me yelling at Mama the whole time to please go at least the speed limit this one time instead of 5 below).  We made it to the hospital and Jackson Patrick was born a few hours later.  And this woman's life was changed forever.  I found Jesus that day.  If Jesus could give a sinner like me such a beautiful child to love, then I wanted to follow Him all the days of my life.

My little sister Ellen, my Lamaze coach (true story)

Jackson you are the reason I know Jesus and you show Him to so many other people in the incredible young man you are.  We love you and are so proud of you big 7 year old!

Jack also had his first day of 1st grade yesterday!  All day school!  You can imagine how I cried dropping him off.  My sweet, sweet boy is growing up!

I didn't want to let him go.

Before & After

One of the goals we had when we moved, was that we would garage sale and thrift store shop to get some things that we would need for a new house.  With our old house being 1,000 square feet we didn't have room for a lot!  So here are a few of the things we have gotten and restored so far...
Old North End Garage Sale Find ($20)
Boston has decided that he would like to have a cowboy room and he wanted a
red dresser to go along with that!

Annie Sloan Emperor's Silk Chalk Paint (I can't say how much I love chalk paint!)

Now Jack, on the other hand, has asked for a hunting room.  "His own private room" :)  So we have been working on lots of camouflage things for that!

BEFORE I know I have already redone these but I found these awesome new dining room chairs that I have a new project lined up for so we redid one of these old ones for Jack.  I scored a new desk, hutch, and bookcase for him at the Woodmoor Garage Sale and we painted this chair to match those.
One of our old neighbors actually gave us this rocker when we were moving.  Jack thought that it looked like the one that Ben Cartwright reads his Bible in so he had to have it!  We redid it in camo as well.

And then Pops brought these beauties up from his personal collection for Jack and Boss to add to their hunting and cowboy rooms.  The boys were pretty excited about them!

True Story

You know how sometimes things happen that are so unbelievable that you have to preface it with, TRUE STORY!  It actually happened.  Well our lives are getting to the point that I think I should just start prefacing every story that way.  Some are really awesome stories and some are really sad and hard ones but the Lord is in all of them and they are TRUE STORIES.
We have some A.M.A.Z.I.N.G friends who offered to give our family a vacation this year.  TRUE STORY.  After all we have been through, they wanted to provide us with some time away to be together.  And since we have said that we connect with our family and the Lord the most outside in His creation, they let us borrow their camper for the weekend. TRUE STORY. We headed up to 11 Mile Reservoir.
If you haven't seen Matty V's new truck, here it is.  My Daddy blessed him with that and I quote, "because he is such a good man and father and he remembers what life was like with a wife who stayed at home with 3 small children, there were more kids coming in than there is money to go around."  TRUE STORY.

Moses and I had an awesome hike.  It was so beautiful up there.  He got a great ride and I had a powerful time with the Lord in this beautiful valley about 1/4 mile past the lake.

Setting up

Inside the camper.  The boys thought it was the most awesome thing ever!

We played lots of games.

Boss gets serious about his Connect 4 strategy

We camped over the fire, John Wayne style.

There was a set of big rocks behind the campsite which is pretty much where these guys stayed the whole time we were are the camper.  They played Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.  And some kid before them had left tons of small army men in the rocks so it was a great treasure hunt too!

Fishing with Daddy is everyone's favorite thing to do.
Last year Moses wasn't even big enough to stand!

They are getting so big so fast my little fishermen!

He's standing and running now on this vacation, our little MoMose.

We had a great time for the first day and a half.  We hiked, fished, played outside, cooked like cowboys!  Then, I started to have chest pains. TRUE STORY.    We waited and waited and it didn’t go away.  We packed up and headed back Saturday night thinking that maybe getting to lower altitude would help.  I got worse and worse and it went into my arm.  Matt called 911 and guess what I got to ride back to the Springs in?

TRUE STORY.
An ambulance carried me from Divide down to the Springs.  We stayed in the ER til about 1 in the morning only to find out that my heart is fine.  It’s still going on.  We have no idea what it is.  We did get test results back last week about my blood levels from losing John Marshall.  There are some things that have to be further investigated from those.  However, from the information we have been given none of that should be affecting my heart.  All of that to say, I am also having panic attacks due to everything that has happened this year.  And according to my FAB 5 (that's what I like to call my five girlfriends who know my deepest darkest secrets and love me anyway) I need to relax, breathe deep, and wait for God's grace, peace, and mercy to sweep over me.  So when each of them said a version of that yesterday I realized that the anxiety and stress of this year has compiled into this huge lump in my chest.  It is all another part of the lesson in which God keeps teaching me over and over…WAIT and I AM IN CONTROL. The Lord is pursuing my heart to rest in Him.  Lord, may I submit and learn the lesson.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7
